About Ohio Student Association

Ohio Student Association works to help unleash the power of young people through base-building organizing,

grassroots campaigns, and leadership development. We have fought for education justice, community safety,

economic justice, and democracy reform since 2012. Our organization has trained hundreds of young people as

community organizers and leaders. Since 2018, we have registered 75,000 voters and created paths for young

Civic Engagement Director

OSA seeks a Civic Engagement Director to develop the civic capacity of young people on college campuses

across Ohio, activate student leaders to take action on important issues that impact them, and support grassroots

membership organizing across the state.

Required Skills & Abilities:

The Civic Engagement Director is a self-motivated and detail-oriented critical thinker with a strong track record of successfully and concurrently managing a variety of initiatives. They are committed to the principles of social

justice, have a leadership background, and know how to manage a large volume of relationships and solve

problems quickly and efficiently. They should love working with young people, possess strong planning and

organizational skills, strong time management, relational, written and oral communication skills.

Job Responsibilities:

● Ability to work effectively with diverse staff, leaders, partners, and the general public

● Identify and develop power building relationships with student leaders and campus organizations,

grassroots groups, labor unions, and social/economic justice advocates

● Identifies student issues and works with teams to strategize and implement policy advocacy and issue

campaigns at the campus and statewide levels

● Organizes [a] outreach activities with volunteers including canvassing, phone/texting banking, and tabling,

[b] leadership development and organizing activities such as trainings, leadership and committee

meetings, and [c] large-scale public actions including lobby days, community conversations, town halls,

public meetings, and direct actions

● Participates in campaign framing and messaging, including collaborating on talking points, press

releases, reports, social media, and other communications materials as necessary

● Support building volunteer chapters that educate and motivate people to take action around campus and

state level racial, economic, and social justice issues.

● Participate in fundraising efforts including grant writing, reporting and funder relationship cultivation

● Help OSA organizers and leaders develop goals and utilize data and compliance systems for integrated

voter engagement strategies within their campaigns

● Work closely with the operations team to support the development of legally compliant materials and

resources for distribution across the organization within budget.

● Work closely with the data, digital and communications team members to develop innovative targeting

strategies for reaching student voter constituencies

● Train and manage staff and volunteers, providing hands-on coaching and support for canvasses, phone

banks and other voter engagement activities.

● Analyze data and messaging research to develop trainings, scripts and informational materials for OSA

members and campus partners

● Maintain understanding of current state and local issue campaigns and political landscapes

Position Details:

The OSA Civic Engagement Director is a full-time salaried position. A Bachelor's Degree or equivalent work

experience is preferred but persons meeting the skills listed above should still apply. Benefits include

health/dental insurance, vacation, and retirement match. They must possess a cell phone, an Ohio driver’s

license and have access to a reliable automobile. Regular in-state and national travel is required. Some weekend

and evening hours will be required.

Work-related expenses are reimbursed according to policy. Physical requirements include frequent standing,

walking, ability to sit in meetings and lift moderate weight for supplies. Columbus-based professionals preferred, but other Ohio-based candidates will be considered.

Classification: Ohio Organizing Collaborative recognizes a staff bargaining unit with the Ohio Organizing

Collaborative Staff Union/Chicago Midwest Regional Joint Board Workers United. This position will include

management duties and is not included in the Ohio Organizing Colloborative's bargaining unit.

Experience and Salary Range: Previous non-profit or electoral campaign management, policy advocacy or

legislative experience required. Strong relationships with other organizations and state policymakers working on

higher education or other issues impacting students desired but not required. Demonstrated experience working in and building relationships in diverse communities.

Salary Range: $60,000 - $80,000 commensurate with experience.
