Job Description

Akkodis is seeking an Electrical Technician for a contractual role with a locomotive/railway client in East Saint Louis, IL

Rate Range : $33/hour - $38/hour; The rate may be negotiable based on experience, education, geographic location, and other factors.

Electrical Technician job responsibilities include:

Locomotive Electrical System Overhaul:

  • Participate in the complete rebuild of locomotive electrical systems, including control systems, power distribution, wiring, motors, and sensors.
  • Remove, inspect, repair, and replace electrical components as required during the rebuild process.
  • Install new or upgraded electrical components, ensuring compatibility with the existing systems and compliance with safety and industry standards.

Electrical Wiring and Connections:

  • Strip, install, and connect wiring for various electrical systems including propulsion, lighting, HVAC, and communication systems.
  • Ensure all wiring and connections are secure, properly insulated, and aligned with manufacturer specifications.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any wiring or electrical connection issues that arise during the rebuild.

System Integration and Testing:

  • Perform detailed inspections and electrical system tests to ensure that all components are functioning correctly after installation.
  • Conduct diagnostic tests, including continuity checks, voltage tests, and system functionality tests to verify the integrity of electrical systems.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and other technical teams to integrate electrical systems with rebuilt mechanical components.

Troubleshooting and Repairs:

  • Troubleshoot electrical faults or performance issues discovered during the rebuild process.
  • Repair or replace malfunctioning components and ensure electrical systems are fully operational before reassembly.
  • Utilize electrical diagrams, blueprints, and manuals to identify problems and apply effective solutions.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Follow all safety regulations, guidelines, and industry standards to ensure safe operations during the rebuild process.
  • Ensure electrical work meets or exceeds regulatory standards and company requirements.
  • Participate in safety meetings and adhere to protocols to avoid hazards during electrical work on locomotives.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain detailed records of electrical systems replaced or repaired during the rebuild.
  • Document any changes made to original systems, including component replacements and modifications.
  • Assist with reporting the progress of the rebuild to supervisors and managers.

Collaboration and Coordination:

  • Work closely with other technicians, engineers, and team members to ensure the timely and efficient completion of the locomotive rebuild.
  • Participate in team meetings and collaborate in problem-solving and process improvement discussions.
  • Support the team with advice on electrical best practices and solutions for unique challenges during the rebuild process.

Post-Rebuild Testing and Commissioning:

  • Conduct final testing and commissioning of the rebuilt electrical systems, ensuring they meet all performance specifications.
  • Assist with troubleshooting any post-rebuild electrical issues during test runs.
  • Support the final inspection process and ensure the locomotive is ready for operational service.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven experience as an Electrical Technician, specifically working with locomotives and railway systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of electrical systems used in locomotives, including control panels, power distribution systems, traction motors, and high-voltage circuits.
  • Experience with the full overhaul and rebuild of locomotives, including installation and integration of electrical systems.
  • Proficiency in reading electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
  • Strong diagnostic skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex electrical problems.
  • Familiarity with electrical testing tools and equipment (e.g., multimeters, oscilloscopes, continuity testers).
  • Knowledge of relevant safety standards and regulations specific to electrical systems in railway equipment.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and communicate effectively with other departments.
  • Flexibility to work in varying environments, including confined spaces and outdoor conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to follow through on tasks and procedures.

Working Conditions:

  • Work in a mechanical workshop, often with heavy equipment and materials.
  • Physical labor, including lifting and working in confined or elevated spaces.
  • Willingness to work extended hours, weekends, or nights as necessary to meet project deadlines.
  • Some travel may be required for on-site support during the rebuild process or testing phase.
