Job Description

Under the supervision of the Director of the Office of Domestic Justice and Human Development (in consultation with the Director of the Office of International Justice and Peace), serves the U.S Bishops as senior advisor on policy concerning care for creation and integral ecology, and on related areas such as trade, and the ethics of technology and finance. The Advisor coordinates the Environmental Justice Program in service to aims of the Secretariat. The Advisor analyzes relevant issues, policies, legislation and regulations, and advises the Directors and other staff, and the Committees on Domestic Justice and Human Development and International Justice and Peace regarding their implications; collaborates with the Secretariat’s education and communications staff, helps develop strategy, advises diocesan staff, writes letters and statements, and prepares reports, presentations and testimony; and serves as liaison to Washington-based national organizations and diocesan groups. The Advisor serves as part of a team within the Offices and the Secretariat and demonstrates shared qualities of effectiveness in all work interactions.

 

Continuing Responsibilities: (List from highest to lowest priority.)

1)Policy Development and Advocacy 

a)Analyze issues, policies, legislation, regulations and other materials related to policy issues concerning care for creation/environment and integral ecology, and on related areas such as trade, and the ethics of technology and finance that lead to policy development/recommendations and/or applications of current USCCB policy, especially in areas that impact the poor and vulnerable. 

b)Contribute to advocacy of public policy positions on priority care for creation issues with members of Congress and the Executive Branch in close coordination with the Office of Government Relations, and with the media in close coordination with the Communications Manager for Social Mission and the Department of Communications. 

c)Contribute to the development, review and clearance of bishops’ statements, official correspondence, resources, alerts and other communications on domestic issues to advance the USCCB mission and advocate for the Bishops’ policies and priorities.

d)Represent the Conference and its positions on care for creation with Congress and the Executive Branch staff, (in close collaboration with the Office of Government Relations), and other national policy and advocacy organizations. 

e)Assist in the Development of strategy to advance Church teaching and policy aims at both the Federal and State/Diocesan level with relevant stakeholders.

 

2)Staffing Bishops’ Committees 

a)Provide staff assistance and support, under the direction and supervision of the Director of the Office of Domestic Justice and Human Development with input from the Director of the Office of International Justice and Peace, for the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development and Committee on International Justice and Peace, and other USCCB structures as appropriate.

 

3)Representation/Relationships

a)Maintain and build necessary relationships and represent USCCB with Catholic and secular partners (e.g. Catholic Climate Covenant (CCC), Catholic Relief Services, the National Religious Partnership for the Environment (NRPE), and others).

b)Communicate policies and strengthen collaboration with national Catholic organizations and other national policy and advocacy organizations.

c)Represent USCCB at meetings of Catholic and interfaith partners, and with environmental, development and public health organizations.

 

4)Education/Convening/Communications

a)Work with the education and communications staff of the Secretariat to help develop action alerts, educational materials and other initiatives to inform Catholics about and engage them in issues relating to care for creation and related issues.

b)Develop, deliver and arrange presentations (e.g. speeches, articles, talks, testimonies, interviews and workshops) on Church teaching and the U.S. Bishops’ positions on care for creation and related issues, as well as develop offerings to spread interest and participation in creation care issues.

c)Collaborate with other Conference staff on major meetings that address care for creation and related issues, e.g. the annual Social Ministry Gathering and other events.

d)In coordination with the Communications Manager for Social Mission and the Department of Communications, coordinate responses to requests from journalists and others and proactively promote USCCB positions on priority domestic concerns.

 

Level:bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred

Major Field/Specialty: Environmental science or policy, domestic or international public policy, law (especially environmental law), ethics, and/or Catholic Social Teaching preferred.

Number of Years Required:minimum 4-5 years

 

The starting salary for this position is $88,803. This is the amount to be expected when starting in this position.

The upper limit for this position is $112,038. This is the amount to be expected after being in this role for an extended period of time.
