The Corrosion Research Laboratory at the University of South Florida (USF) is seeking a highly motivated PhD student for Fall 2025. Our state-of-the-art facility is equipped with cutting-edge electrochemical instrumentation aimed at uncovering the mechanisms of corrosion initiation and propagation. Our research focuses on addressing critical challenges posed by corrosion, which affects everything from water distribution systems to aerospace components. Laboratory resources include Scanning Kelvin Probe (SKP) and Scanning Vibrating Electrode Technique (SVET) instruments, micro-electrochemical cells, impedance analyzers, potentiostats, a 3D profilometer, and the resources of the USF Nanotechnology Research and Education Center.
Research Focus: Corrosion presents a significant risk to global infrastructure, exacerbated by climate change. Our research aims to develop methods to detect, quantify, and mitigate corrosion damage, while investigating its underlying mechanisms. This work plays a critical role in designing more durable materials, developing prediction tools for infrastructure life expectancy, and optimizing materials for a rapidly evolving climate.
The selected students will focus on investigating the mechanisms of corrosion propagation in concrete , with a particular emphasis on the durability of new concrete formulations designed to sequester carbon dioxide. Through a combination of experimental techniques and multiphysics simulations, this research will advance our understanding of how these materials can maintain durability, especially with respect to steel reinforcement corrosion.
