Job Description

Our client provides smart building technology that delivers real-time insights to optimize indoor spaces, improve workforce productivity, predict real estate needs, and enhance operational efficiency, including reducing energy costs. Their smart building solutions include indoor air quality and comfort monitoring, high-efficiency HVAC filtration, space utilization sensors, occupancy-based building controls, and real estate performance analytics. With a secure, scalable, and easy-to-use connected platform, they empower owners, operators, and tenants to prepare their buildings for the future.

About The Role:

Our client combines best-in-class IoT-enabled sensors, UV-C technology, and connected data to create an unparalleled ecosystem in efficacy and sustainability that fundamentally changes the health of any building. Their IoT and analytics infrastructure is at an inflection point for extensibility and scale, and they are looking for a versatile, hands-on Data Engineer to help guide this transition.

As the founding Data Engineer, you will spend most of your time designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines and the data warehouse. The team is small with a diverse product portfolio, so they will also need your help with database improvements and schema changes to ensure a highly performant app.

To ensure success as a Data Engineer, you should have advanced programming skills, a keen eye for detail, experience building efficient data pipelines for large data volumes, and a desire to be an integral part of the software development effort.

Responsibilities

Build data pipelines:

  • Design, develop, and implement data pipelines to dedupe and clean incoming sensor data.
  • Create robust, scalable, and maintainable data infrastructure.
  • Design and implement flexible data models to enable analysis across business domains and instrument data quality checks to ensure accurate reporting.
  • Contribute to the data architecture at our client.

Collaboration:

  • Work directly with the full-stack software engineering team, influencing strategic design and working side by side daily as part of the Agile/Scrum process.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Software/Firmware Engineers, Product Managers, and QA team members, to enhance overall software quality and performance.

About You

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of experience as a Data Engineer.
  • 4+ years of experience creating and maintaining data transformation pipelines with Airflow, dbt, or similar tools.
  • Advanced knowledge of relational and timescale databases.
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL and data modeling best practices.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of the rapidly changing landscape of data tools and best practices.
  • Proficiency with programming script languages, including Python, JavaScript, and PHP.
  • Working experience with data analysis libraries in Python (Pandas, NumPy) or R (dplyr).
  • Strong understanding of software testing methodologies, tools, and best practices.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills within a team-oriented environment.

About The Team

The team firmly believes in over-communicating. As a remote team, over-communication is one of their core principles. This includes asking any question, no matter how small, speaking up when there are concerns, ideas, or feedback, and documenting technical information. They also prioritize convention over configuration, keeping their stacks as similar as possible across projects. As a result, new team members can ramp up on any project quickly, and the team remains open to improving this process.

Their development life cycle is predictable and efficient, but they continuously seek improvements. They welcome new solutions, methods, and technologies as long as they contribute to achieving goals efficiently. Those who are passionate about ensuring software quality through effective automated testing and possess the required skills are encouraged to apply and contribute to the success of their cutting-edge software solutions.

Benefits:

  • Generous time-off policies and paid holidays
  • Competitive total compensation with equity
  • Health benefits (medical, dental, vision) and 401(k) program starting on day one
  • Up to 12 weeks paid parental leave
  • Monthly stipend to support home internet and cell phone for work purposes
  • Budget for WFH equipment
  • Monthly in-office lunches and happy hours
  • Learning and development support
  • Hybrid work environment with only one mandatory day per week in office
