The Shirley-Eustis House Association seeks an experienced and enthusiastic professional to join our volunteer Board of Directors to enhance the board’s fundraising capacity.
About the Shirley-Eustis House Association and Shirley Place
● The Shirley-Eustis House Association (SEHA) was formed in 1913 to preserve Shirley Place, the country estate of two Massachusetts Governors: Royal Governor William Shirley, who built the house in 1747, and William Eustis and his wife Caroline, who owned it from 1819 to 1865. Located in Roxbury, MA, SEHA presents a lively array of programs exploring the legacy of imperial Britain in America, immigration and urbanization in Boston, and the social role of architecture. Heirloom gardens exhibit Roxbury’s role in the rise of scientific horticulture in the early 1800s, and an 1806 carriage barn provides a handicapped-accessible event space and represents the many similar barns that dotted Roxbury in the pre-industrial age.
● In 2023, with help of City of Boston, SEHA purchased 42-44 Shirley Street, the original 1747 stable and probable housing for enslaved groomsmen.
● With the acquisition of this new property, we are seeking to become one of Boston’s leading cultural and education institutions addressing the legacy of British imperial power, including its legacy of systemic racism, through a revitalized interpretative framework and a new campus master plan supporting this framework.
About the Role
Our board members play an active, hands-on role in guiding our long-range planning, governance and ongoing stewardship of Shirley Place.
Specifically, your role on the board will be to work with the executive director and board president to develop and implement strategies to expand our donor base in support of our upcoming master planning initiative. This includes:
· Helping to nurture a culture of giving and ambassadorship on our boards; and
· Participating in the development of a master plan and capital campaign to realize our vision.
Ideal Candidate
SEHA is committed to building a board of directors that reflects the rich racial, cultural and economic diversity of Roxbury and Boston. To that end, we encourage inquiries from POC professionals or community members with a strong background in outreach, donor engagement and fundraising for non-profit organizations.
